NDSCS Preps for Season With Scrimmage at VCSU
On Saturday, the Wildcats traveled to Valley City, ND to scrimmage with the Vikings.
On Saturday, under the direction of first year head coach and Wildcat alumnus Eric Issendorf, the Wildcat football program met up with NAIA Valley City State University for the team's first and only scrimmage of the year in Valley City, ND. The meeting between the Wildcats and Vikings, both former members of the old North Dakota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, was the first competition for each program and an opportunity for the coaches to see how the new direction of Wildcat football is progressing thru the end of the first weeks of fall camp.
Words from Head Coach Issendorf -
"The start of the evening consisted of Inside Run game with OL/RB & DL/LB's and One-on-One's with WR's & DB's. These sessions were very competitive and will serve as great teaching tools for the players when they view the film. The feeling our coaches had, for Inside Run game, was that the guys played with tremendous effort and toughness, with most issues coming from missed assignments. The One-on-One session seemed to be very good, with our most athletic players displaying their ability and competitiveness.
The teams then transitioned to Skeleton/7-on-7 pass game and OL/DL one-on-ones. Skeleton provided an opportunity to apply our coverage concepts and how the guys are understanding their fits and responsibilities. In the OL/DL session, coaches were able to assess the toughness and technique that they have learned and worked to improve.
Lastly, the scrimmage was set-up similar to a half of a game, starting with our Kickoff unit. We felt very satisfied with the overall performance of the team, displaying tremendous poise and control for such a young squad. The comments from the coaches overall were that the team showed outstanding effort, toughness, and discipline. Most of the issues in the game came from minor penalties and lack of execution on both sides of the ball. These are things the coaching staff expects and provides them with the ability to assess each position/position group to get better as we build up for the season opener."
The Wildcats will open the season on the road travelling to Vermillion Community College in Ely, MN on September 1st, 2018. Kick off is set for 2 PM.
