Freshman Phillips Runs Wild in NDSCS Road Win Against Concordia

North Dakota State College of Science bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 31-20 win over Concordia JV on Sunday in Moorhead, Minnesota.

Trashawn McMillan’s 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter opened the game’s scoring. Sophomore Spencer Skeesick added a 38-yard field goal just three minutes later to put NDSCS up 10-0.

The second quarter was all about freshman Desean Phillips.

He scored his first touchdown of the game on the team’s opening drive of the second quarter. Concordia answer with a touchdown of its own, cutting the NDSCS lead to nine, 16-7. On the Cats ensuing possession, Phillips blew the game open for good wit an 88-yard touchdown run.

NDSCS (2-1) would lead by double figures for the remainder of the game.

The Wildcats dominated the line of scrimmage, rushing for 322 yards on 41 attempts as a team. Phillips led the way with 177 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 14 rushes. Kordell Ellis added 79 yards on just six attempts.

NDSCS held the Cobbers to just 121 rushing yards on 46 attempts.

Jamire Jackson and Vlad Freidis each recorded seven tackles with both sophomores adding a sack. The Wildcats totaled five sacks as a team.

It’ll be a short week for Coach Issendorf and company with the Wildcats hosting Dakota College – Bottineau (1-3) on Saturday at Frank Vertin Field.
