After what started as a tough weekend in Iowa, No. 18 North Dakota State College of Science (19-6, 6-1) bounced back with a pair of wins over nationally ranked teams on Saturday at the Triton Invitational in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
The Wildcats were swept by No. 4 Cowley and fell to No. 11 Iowa Central for the second time this season.
Sophomore Gabby Hahn totaled 24 kills and 30 digs, with the second game of the night taking her over 700 digs for her career.
It would end up being a historic weekend for Hahn.
Several freshmen performed admirably against Iowa Central, with Annika Frost (17 assists), Miah Gessell (8 kills, 9 digs) and Katie Krieger (23 digs) all making an impact.
Saturday saw a motivated NDSCS group drill a pair of Iowa teams in No. 19 Kirkwood and No. 20 North Iowa Area CC. It was the second time this season the Wildcats knocked off Kirkwood.
Hahn totaled 25 kills and 36 digs on Saturday, making her the fifth player under Jane Passa to reach 700 career kills.
The freshmen were able to rise to the challenge of competing against elite competition yet again.
Gessell continued what has been her best stretch of the season, finishing with 22 kills and 29 digs on Saturday. Krieger, one of the national leaders in digs per set, finished Saturday with 49 total digs. Frost handed out 37 assists on Saturday and established her the three-highest assist totals of her season this weekend.
Sophomore Lexi Hansch gave Kirkwood the business on Saturday as well, finishing with 22 assists, 10 digs and seven aces.
Hahn and Gessell were both selected to the All-Tournament team for their performances.
The Cats will have a quick turnaround with trips to Williston and Bottineau awaiting them next week. NDSCS has four Mon-Dak Conference games remaining, which will not only decide the conference championship, but also dictate who will host the Region 13 Tournament.
