Wildcats Win Region XIII Title
Marks Four Straight Region XIII Championships for the 'Cats
The NDSCS Wildcats hosted Bismarck State on Sunday for the Region XIII title game. The Wildcats and Mystics split on the season (88-93 @ BSC - 75-71 @ NDSCS) by a combined one point. NDSCS used a gritty second and fourth quarter to help secure a 71-69 point victory.
The Wildcats got down 9-23 early. Peyton Gette kept the Wildcats afloat by hitting three 3 pointers in the first half. The Wildcats started to figure it out in the second quarter winning the quarter 23-14 to take a 32-32 tie going into halftime. Coming out of the half, BSC took the third quarter by a score of 13-15 to give them a two point lead heading into the final 10 minutes. The Wildcats offense came alive in the fourth and were able to put together a 26-22 quarter to secure a 71-69 victory and a fourth straight Region XIII Championship.
The Wildcats were led by Maggie Westling (16 points, 17 rebounds), Lolo Carlow (16 points, four assists), and Ava Boyes (15 points, six rebounds). Demi Van Gils' number was called on the final play of the game. The Wildcats were tied up with BSC with 25 seconds left, and with 2.4 seconds to go, Van Gils hit a runner to put the Wildcats up two. BSC got a look from the logo at the buzzer that was heavily contested that missed and the Wildcats came out on top.
Maggie Westling was named tournament MVP as well as First Team All-Conference. Demi Van Gils was named Second Team All-Conference. Head Coach Bryant Friskop was named the Region XIII Coach of the Year.
The Wildcats (24-7) will host the District Championship against Olive-Harvey (32-1) at home in Wahpeton, ND on Saturday at 3:30 PM.
